All crystals react differently with water. Some can withstand water, and some are not. This article will find out if Calcite can go into the water.

Scoring at three over ten in the Mohs Scale, Calcite can go in the water for a short period.

Considering its score on the Mohs scale of hardness, Calcite is pretty soft. This implies that Calcite is bound to succumb to the effect of water.

However, because of its carbonate mineral composition, Calcite is potent and not water-soluble.

Even though it scores three on the Mohs hardness scale, it can still go in the water.

Knowing if the crystal can go in water or not is essential to consider two things: the rank in the Mohs scale and its component.

In this case, the Calcite contains components that are not water-soluble. However, it is still not advisable for Calcite to be soaked in water for a long time.

What will happen to Calcite in water?

When the Calcite gets in the water for an extended period, the water molecules may go to the tiny fissures of the crystal and make them wider.

This widening can often happen if you put your Calcite in water too often, resulting in the enormous creation of cracks.

One water bath can make the fissures more significant, but it is still not visible to the eyes, so most people do not believe water baths are harmful.

However, putting your Calcite in water baths too often can make the fissures go bigger and faster.

The widening of those cracks can also change how the light reflects, and it can refract off the surface, which can cause the Calcite to look dull.

The stone may also turn yellow as the rust can be developed in those cracks.

The water can also strip off the protective layer (like oil polish) in your Calcite, which can react in water and cause a complete color change.

Can Calcite Go in Running Water?
