Fish is one of the oldest symbols used to associate different ideas. People commonly associate fish with Christianity and Jesus Christ; therefore, it holds a spiritual significance in the bible.

The fish in the bible signifies Jesus Christ. The Greek word for fish is “ichthus.” In this word, the initial letters of some names and titles of Jesus are hidden, like Iesous Christos Theou Uios Soter (Jesus Christ, God's Son, Savior). The fish symbol functioned as the confession of faith for Greek-speaking Christians.

The fish sign dates from the beginning of the era, invented by the first Christians. During the Roman empire, believing in one God was forbidden; therefore, Christians had to be careful with their statements.

They looked for everyday symbols that they would not immediately recognize but could encourage one another.

Christians during the Roman Empire were persecuted, and there were various descriptions of torture, including crucifixions and executions that ended between wild animals in the arena. The fish was an identifier for Christians during that time.

The Prophetic Meaning of Fish

Before Christianity was born, fish was a common symbol in ancient civilizations. The symbol of fish is found in the east and Vedic texts.

According to one Vedic lore, an archetypical man named Manu grew fish that grew bigger and bigger, and eventually, he used this fish to carry him to the shores after a great floor. This legendary fish is said to have a horn, where many attached his boat and safely traveled over the water.

Manu is believed to be the father of humankind, which originates directly from Brahma, also called Svayamhua or the self-existent. He is Brahma's spiritual son, a godly man.

He was also their guardian and mentor. The fish in the folklore was the reincarnation of an avatar of the God, Vishnu himself.

Vishnu is the one who is everything and is in everything. Vishnu is not only a Hindu deity but also a metaphysical principle.

Meanwhile, in ancient Egypt, fish was considered a staple food, be it fresh or dried; however, fish was forbidden to use in anything related to religious works. It's because of the legend that says that Busiris, a god, can transform these people into Chromis fish.

People who involve fish in religious works should avoid eating it. There's also a goddess in the shape of a dolphin regarded as the chief of fish.

In Egypt, the fish has rich symbolism and value. However, it's considered mysterious beneath the Nile river.

There are certain fish that act as the pilot of the boat of Ra. They also mentioned the fish in the myth of Osiris as one of the body parts of the God after the God Set killed him and scattered his body across the land.

Furthermore, the Chromis fish possesses protective qualities, so amulets and lucky charms that represent it were widespread.

The fish is also the universal symbol of fertility and abundance due to their reproductive habits. It signifies marriage and family too.

In the eastern cultures, any living thing that lives in the water represents fertility and prosperity. The bases of the Khmer monument come with fish-shaped carvings.

This association is necessary because it indicates that fish are associated with the underworld, and their nature is chaotic and constant.

For some reason, fish are regarded as unclean. According to Saint Martin, fishes are unclean because the fish heads are not separated from the rest of their bodies.

Leviticus does not forbid eating fish, but they should not serve as sacrificial animals.

Fish as a water creature denotes life itself and the ever flowing cycles of life. It's a silent, mystical creature associated with secrets and flexibility.

In Christian iconography, fish is a common motif.

For devoted Christians, a fish could signify a sign of Jesus Christ and God. If you see fish in your dreams, it could be a sign from the heavens or your guardian angels that send you a message to boost or strengthen your faith.

In any case, the fish symbolizes life, implying it's a good sign. Seeing actual fish or fish symbols can draw someone's attention.

It could be seen as a prophetic sign with a positive meaning attached.

Fish in the Bible Verses

You've probably recalled in your bible studies several essential stories about fish. For example, you've heard about the story of the miraculous catching of fish.

In Luke 5:1-9, the story is about Peter and his friends. After a night of catching anything, they were instructed by Jesus to go back and let their nets down.

They told Jesus that they had just been all-out night and didn't catch any fish. Nevertheless, they still listened to Jesus, went out, and let their nets down.

After a while, they caught so many fishes that the nets began to break. At that point, they realized that Jesus was extraordinary and decided to leave everything and follow Him.

Another story in the bible is the 153 miracle; after Jesus rose from the dead, a similar event happens wherein Peter, John, and the others spent a night fishing and catching nothing. Jesus tells them to throw their nets on their right side to catch fish.

They again followed His instructions, and during this time, they caught 153 fishes, but the nets didn't break.

When they came back and returned to the shore, they saw a fire burning coals with fish on it and some bread. Then, Jesus said to them, “Bring some of the fish you've just caught.

So, Simon Peter climbed back into the boat and dragged the net to the shore. It was filled with 153 large fishes; the net was not torn despite that.

Jesus then said to them, come and have breakfast. None of the disciples dared to ask him who is this person.

They knew right away that it was the Lord. Jesus came, then took the bread and gave it to them.

He also did the same with the fish. Another story in the bible that features fishes is feeding the 5,000.

It was getting darker, and the crowd that followed Jesus to hear His preachings had ballooned to more than 5,000. The people were hungry and had a long way to travel back home; therefore, Jesus told His disciples to feed the crowd.

The people thought that it was impossible. Then, a boy approached Jesus and gave Him five loaves of bread and two fishes.

Yet, the disciples still doubted. However, Jesus multiplied the meager loves and two fishes to feed enough the entire crowd and still have leftovers.

If you've ever faced an impossible situation, nothing is impossible with God. He can perform miracles.

Another fish story in the bible is the story of Jonah. The big fish swallowed Jonah, and he stayed in his stomach of the big fish for three days.

God saved Jonah using the big fish despite that he ran away from God. After God saved him, Jonah got the message and went to Ninevah to preach.

Meanwhile, in Exodus 30:11-16, God built the temple tax, and it was a requirement that was part of the law in the Old Testament.

Although Jesus, as the son of God, wasn't exempted from paying taxes, he didn't want to offend the tax collector. He told Peter to go fishing and use a hook and line instead of a net.

Then Jesus instructed Peter to look in the mouth of the first fish he caught because he would find a coin in its mouth. The coin would suffice to pay the tax for both Peter and Jesus.

Seeing a fish in the water represents journey and life; therefore, it's a good sign unless you feel anxious about this dream. If this is the case, it signifies the feeling of being helpless.

Destiny will take complete control of you.

Dreaming of fish jumping out of the water brings both the element of air and water. Air represents inner knowledge that you are diving into.

Many people associate this dream with the holy trinity (body, soul, and spirit) and signify divine connection. Other scenarios have different meanings.

For instance, a fish on dry land represents anything good but could suggest failure and sorrow.

The fish cannot survive on land, so this dream has a wrong interpretation. It suggests that you cannot realize your limitations to try and go beyond your borders.
