What is Traveling Grace?
Traveling grace, also known as traveling mercy, is a prayer for safe travels and protection from accidents or harm while traveling.
Interceding Saint Christopher or praying his prayers is what travelers do to express good fortune when traveling.
Who is St. Christopher?
Saint Christopher is well known as the patron saint of travelers and motorists. People well remembered his uncomplicated story.
He is the one who assisted travelers in crossing the arduous and dangerous river. Then, one day, a child arrived asking to be delivered to the other side of the river.
Reprobus, Christopher’s given name, carried this child on his back. He feels heavier and heavier to be held.
Reprobus feared that he would fall and both of them would drown.
Reprobus asked the child, and he revealed himself as Jesus Christ. Jesus told Reprobus that his heaviness comes from carrying the weight of the world's sins.
With perseverance, Reprobus kept going despite the difficulty of crossing the river while carrying Christ on his shoulders. After crossing the river, Jesus Christ baptized Reprobus and gave him his Christian name—Christopher, meaning “Bearer of Christ.”
Christopher spent the rest of his life serving Jesus Christ, spreading his word. He was a man of great size, devoting the remainder of his life to helping travelers cross the dangerous river.
As one of the Fourteen Holy Helpers, Saint Christopher was revered by travelers and mariners as a symbol of protection and safe passage in the sea. Many travelers believe and invoke him for safe travels, saving them from a watery death.
Travelers, drivers, and motorists wear his medallion representing Saint Christopher carrying Jesus Christ on his shoulder. “Svts. Christopher's Protector Noster” are the words encircling the medallion, which means “Saint Christopher Our Protector.”
Saint Christopher died as a martyr in Lycia in 251 A.D. under the reign of Emperor Decius.
