Archangel Raziel has a deep connection with the secrets and knowledge of the Universe, gaining the title the Angel of Mysteries. He is close to the throne of God, so he has access to his knowledge and secrets, where he receives all of his wisdom.
Ancient text believes that he receives the divine secrets and writes it down, including God's words. Therefore, his name Raziel means the secrets of God.
In Hebrew, Raziel means “God is my mystery,” also known as Gallitsur in the teachings of Kabbalah (Jewish mysticism). He played a significant role in the early Jewish mystical traditions, where he is known as the Angel of Secrets or Angel of Mysteries and even as the Keeper of All Magic.
Although Archangel Raziel was not mentioned in the Old Testament or anywhere in the Scripture, his name was first mentioned in the Book of Enoch. He is described as standing on Mount Horeb proclaiming all the secrets mankind needs to hear.
“Each day the angel Raziel makes proclamations on Mount Horeb, from heaven, of the secrets of men to all that dwell upon the earth, and his voice resounds throughout the world.” (Targum on Ecclesiastes 10.20)
As he stood close to the throne of God, hearing all the secret knowledge from him. Archangel Raziel wrote down all the wisdom he received for the purpose of preserving it. He turned all of this information into a book called the Book of Raziel, best known as the Sefer Raziel or the Book of Secrets.
This ancient text inscribes all the knowledge of the Universe into a Jewish text where legends say it was originally written on a sapphire stone. It contains everything about celestial and earthly wisdom, from astrology to the creative life energy, such as the soul's birth, death, and reincarnation.
According to Rosemary Ellen Guiley, who wrote in her book, The Encyclopedia of Magic and Alchemy, the Sefer Raziel contains vast knowledge and information about the Universe. The Sefer Raziel consists of “the secret wisdom of the 72 letters of the name of God and its esoteric 670 mysteries, and 1,500 keys, which had not been even given to angels.”
The book holds the angelic wisdom and knowledge revealing secrets and mysteries of creation, angelic scripts and languages, magical incantations and instructions, the seven hells, other types of angels and spirits ruling various things in creation, and other information dealing with magic, cosmology, and mystics.
According to myths, Raziel hears everything that happens in this world. So, he helped Adam and Eve when they ate from the forbidden tree of the knowledge of good and evil—the tree in the story of the Garden of Eden in Genesis 2–3, causing them to be banished from the Garden of Eve.
Archangel Raziel wanted to help the two to find their way back and to understand their God better. So, he gave them the Sefer Raziel, which made other Archangels envious and provoked leading them to cast the book into the sea.
God decided not to punish Archangel Raziel, but instead, he ordered Rahab to retrieve the book and return it to Adam and Eve.
While on the other hand, the book states that God sent Archangel Raziel to Earth to help Adam and Eve.
“God sent forth, Raziel, the angel, who dwelled upon the river going forth from the Garden of Eden.” He was revealed to Adam as the sun went black. By his hand, he gave the book to Adam, saying: “Do not fear and lament no longer. From the day you served in prayer, the prayers were heard. I come to give the knowledge of the words of purity and great wisdom. Become wise by the words of this holiest book.”
Adam drew near and heard, yearning to be guided by the holy book. Raziel, the angel, opened the book and read the words. Hearing the words of the holy book from the mouth of Raziel the angel, he fell upon the ground trembling in fear. Raziel spoke: “Rise up and be strong. Revere the power of God. Take the book from my hand and learn from it. Understand the knowledge. Make it known to all pure. Therein establish what will occur in all time.”
Adam took the book. A great fire kindled upon the bank of the river. The angel rose up in flames and returned to heaven. Then Adam knew the angel had been sent forth by Elohim, the holy king, to deliver the book, sustained therein in holiness and purity. The words of the book proclaim works to perform when seeking to prosper in the world.

Archangel Raziel shared and explained the book's contents to Adam, revealing everything to him, such as death and life, mysteries of the world, and goodness and evil. After acquiring the secret knowledge, Adam, the first man to read the book of Archangel Raziel, passed it down from generation to generation.
He first shared the sacred knowledge with his son Seth, which was transmitted to the next generations. Then, with the help of Archangels Metatron and Raphael, the mysterious book Sefer Raziel was passed down the line of Jewish patriarchs.
The secret book came into the possession of Enoch, the great-grandfather of Noah. He was a biblical figure who walked with God stating a short sentence in the book of Genesis.
“Enoch walked faithfully with God” in (Genesis 5:22)
As repeated in Genesis 5:24, “Enoch walked faithfully with God; then he was no more because God took him away.”
It is believed that he did not die. Instead, God “took him away.”
The Sefer Raziel was passed to Noah, Enoch's great-grandson, who also walked faithfully with God—see Genesis 6:9. Only Noah and his family were spared in the Great Flood because of his righteousness and faith.
God sent Archangel Raphael to speak with Noah. The Sefer Raziel state itself what Raphael said to Noah:
“I have been sent forth by the word of Elohim. The Lord God restores the Earth. I make known what will be and what to do, and deliver this holy book. You will understand how to be guided therein by works most holy and pure.”
Noah understood the sacred knowledge and survived the Great Flood. Noah then passed the book to his son Shem.
Shem passed the wisdom next to Abraham and handed it to Isaac, who passed it down to Jacob and gave the knowledge down through the line of Jewish patriarchs.
The book was widely circulated by the 13th century as it is no longer hidden. However, many scholars think that an anonymous author wrote the Sefer Raziel.
It was first printed in 1710 when people used it as a tool for spiritual protection. Now, the Sefer Raziel has widely spread and can be read by anyone. However, the original book was never found with or without traces left.
Whether the book was found or not, the wisdom and knowledge were passed down so that humans can have easy access now. Although with the widespread and accessible information, some might be already mixed by different cultures, religions, and beliefs of their versions.
