The eyes are not only meant to see the world's color, vibrance, texture, and light. It is also meant to see the beauty of life.

In a more profound sense, you see not to judge others but to see beyond what the physical realm presents.

It is limited physically, but it understands what the heart truly desires. William Shakespeare once said, “The Eyes are the window to your soul.”

With eyes, you see the truth and express your innermost thoughts and intentions of the heart. It never lies, speaks unspoken words, creates a deeper connection, and seeks enlightenment.

So, a loss of sight is also like losing light. But people over centuries put their faith in the Patron Saint of the blind, St. Lucy, in trust that their eyesight can be restored through reverence to her.

Who is Saint Lucy, and why do people pray to her?

St. Lucy was once a brave woman who lost her life during the persecution of Christians in the early 4th century. Although her story has been lost, people wanted to shed light on St. Lucy's bravery, so legends and stories began to emerge.

One of the famous stories that Christians still hold was about St. Lucy pledging to remain a virgin in the tradition of St. Agatha, devote her worldly good to helping the poor, and vowed her life in service of the Lord.

She was born into a noble family in Syracuse, Sicily, where she gained many suitors. Her mother, Eutychia, arranged a marriage for her, but St. Lucy was able to postpone it for 3years as she did not wish to be married.

In her persistence to change her mother's mind about her faith, St. Lucy prayed to the tomb of St. Agatha, resulting in the cure of her mother's illness. Eutychia allowed St. Lucy to continue living in faith and consecration in the Lord.

Paschasius, St. Lucy's rejected groom, reported her to the authorities, denouncing her as a Christian.

She was forced into defilement at a brothel. However, the guards who came to fetch her could not move her even when they hitched her with a team of oxen.

In their desperation, they condemned her to death by fire. They surrounded her with bundles of wood, but with divine intervention, the fire immediately died out.

Finally, the guard resorted to using a sword or a dagger in her throat, killing St. Lucy.

According to other stories, it is said that St. Lucy warned Paschasius that he would be punished. He ordered his guards to gouge out St. Lucy's eyes in his rage.

However, in other tales, it is said that it was St. Lucy herself who took out her own eyes to dismay her persistent suitors who loved her beautiful eyes.

In her burial, it was discovered that her eyes were restored, and it was said that God blessed her with new pair of eyes.

Her legend and death in the hands of Romans made her the Patron Saint of the blind, eye healings and ailments with the meaning of her name Lucy as “light” of “lucid.”

From the middle ages until now, St. Lucy has been venerated by people, and her influence on Christianity spread across the world.

St. Lucy loves to deliver wheat and bread to the poor. She would bring a lamp or wear a crown of candles to free her hand and hold food, reaching Christians staying in the catacombs.

The crown of candles and lamp became a symbol of St. Lucy. During her feast day every 13th of December, her devotees offer wheat to the poor to save them from famine.
