The myth began with Aries' association with the Golden Ram. The very same Ram rescued Phrixus and transported him to Colchis. He then sacrificed the ram to the gods. The Golden Fleece, which also occurs in the narrative of Jason and the Argonauts, was the ram's skin that he put in a temple.
King Athamas had a son and a daughter, Phrixos and Helle. So, Ino, the children's stepmother, despised them and wished to get rid of them. She devised a scheme to bring the country to the brink of famine by ensuring that the wheat harvest failed.
When someone sent a man to Delphi to consult the Oracle, Ino bribed him. She told him to lie and say the Oracle demanded that the king's children be a sacrifice. She also stated that it was the only way for the people to avoid starvation.
When a flying ram with golden fleece came to their rescue, Phrixus and Helle were ready to die. Their true mother, the cloud nymph Nephele, sent the ram. It flew east to Colchis with both youngsters. Only Phrixus made it through the journey. Helle drowned in the Dardanelles after falling off the ram.
